The Giraffe have arrived!

In early June, after huge anticipation, The Cotswold Wildlife Park finally welcomed the first Giraffe to the Cotswolds.

The three boys, Koife, Century and Wallace arrived at the Park to great fanfare and have been spending the last few weeks settling into their new home.

The current plan is to keep only males to begin with, allowing The Cotswold Wildlife Park to gain expertise with the species as well as providing an invaluable service to the giraffe breeding programme.   In the wild, Giraffe exist in small groups, usually a breeding bull and several females.  In captivity, it is impossible to predict the sex of youngsters and zoos can find themselves with too many males – this is where The Cotswold Wildlife Park comes in.  Breeding males will fight, but are fine together if there are no girls around!  The formation of  “bachelor” herds is therefore vital to manage the captive population.  The three boys can now be seen in their paddock and newly completed housing @ The Cotswold Wildlife Park, nr Burford.
