Abbey launches parish magazine

TEWKESBURY Abbey is launching a parish magazine to let supporters know what’s happening and to reach out to people in the town. Staff, clergy and volunteers have put together the first 36-page issue and aim to publish it on March 12.

Abbey curate the Reverend Steve Short said: “We felt that the Abbey did not have a good way to give out information on a regular basis. The magazine will look forwards to what is coming up and also outwards, to the community.”

The magazine is packed with historical, current and thought-provoking articles, interviews, letters, poems, recipes, quizzes and jokes.

“There is some historical information in there but we also want to look forward and reach out to the people of Tewkesbury,” said Reverend Short.

The magazine will come out four times a year, every four months and tie in with the seasons. There is no charge but donations will be welcome. People can pick up a copy at the Abbey in Church Street, the library in Sun Street and the tourist information office in Barton Street or can get it on subscription. It will also carry advertising to help offset the cost.

The magazine has been brought back by popular demand after a break of five years. The old Abbey News had been published for 150 years when it stopped publication in 2005.

Reverend Short said: “At every annual church council meeting someone asked if the magazine could be brought back.”

The magazine is edited voluntarily by Eileen Gilder, who is already compiling the second edition. The second issue will be published on June 14 and anyone who wants to submit an article should do so by May 10 by emailing peg@eileene7even.com.

To advertise in the magazine and raise money for the Abbey, ring the executive officer Philippa Shaw on 01684 856141 or email her at operations@tewkesburyabbey.org.uk.
