If you have read The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings from J.R.R Tolkien’s popular Middle Earth Cycle books, you will know all about the two hobbits - Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.

Hobbits are typically between two and four feet tall and are considered heroes due to their amazing courage and ability to accomplish great feats and it is for these reasons that they are honoured with a Hobbit Day!

As a separate event to Tolkien Week, Hobbit Day is the oldest day celebrated by fans and has been celebrated since 1973 where people do anything from going barefoot all day and having seven meals to holding literary discussions, having feasts and parties.

If you planning to celebrate Hobbit Day, we’ve found some great ideas to help you celebrate:

  • Plan a party with hobbit fans – with dancing, singing, fireworks, lanterns and more!
  • Hold your party outside or next to a big tree, put up decorations with a hobbit theme
  • Make sure your party has a whole host of food – a large meal or lots of snacks
  • Real out loud a passage about Hobbits from one of Tolkien’s books.
  • Hobbits love games, so make sure you play plenty
  • Have a special cake – remember it’s Bilbo’s and Frodo’s birthday
  • Give people who attend a small, creative gift
  • If you don’t think your friends would be interested in your Hobbit Day, celebrate the day in your own way.

Whatever you decide to do, happy Hobbit Day!
