How to clean your decking

Wooden decking is fantastic to look at and is great to sit out on and dine al fresco, but if left untreated it can soon lack lustre and look unloved.  Here are some tips on how to clean your decking:

  • Clear the decking – remove any furniture, plants and accessories from the decking so you can easily get to the wood to clean it.
  • Sweep the decking – brush the leaves and loose dirt off the decking before you bring out the cleaning solution.
  • Apply Cleaning Product – there are a variety of decking cleaners on the market.  Check the right solution for your decking material.  Look for environmentally friendly products that are safe around pets and won’t kill your plants.  Whatever cleaner you use, wear gloves and follow the instructions to the letter.  Apply cleaning solution to all areas and leave on for as long as the instructions state.
  • Scrub the deck – now you’re ready to scrub the decking.  You can do this by hand with a hard bristled brush or with a pressure cleaner.  Work outside from the corners of the deck. Rinse the decking using a hose. If using a pressure washer, fill the tank with clean water.
  • Allow to dry – make sure the decking is dry before replacing furniture.  It’s best to clean the decking when you know it will be a sunny day.

Whether you have wooden decking, vinyl decking or composite decking, you should only need to clean it once or twice a year.
