  • Thursday 8th May 11:00am until 3:00pm
On Thursday 8th May, Abney Court, in Cheadle, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

From 11am-3pm, Abney Court will be hosting a garden party including afternoon tea and a selection of traditional cakes specially prepared by the home’s chef. To get everyone’s toe tapping, Lucy Emma will provide entertainment throughout the day, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, while team members will be dressing in wartime costumes – with a fun competition planned to crown the best dressed.

As part of the commemorations, a wreath will also be laid at the village war memorial, offering a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who served.

Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Abney Court, said: “Here at Abney Court we’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“This is an incredibly important milestone for many residents, and we’re keen to honour all those involved. Music is a fantastic way to bring back memories for older people and a wonderful way to bring communities together, so we’re thrilled to welcome Lucy Emma to get everyone’s toes tapping.

We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Abney Court as we mark such a significant moment in history.”

Abney Court has officially received ‘Veteran Friendly’ status for meeting eight standards laid out in the Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF), a collaboration between Armed Forces charities Royal Star & Garter and Royal British Legion, and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), with funding support from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

The VFF framework involves noting Armed Forces status within residents’ care plans, addressing social isolation, and signposting residents and their relatives to relevant support services, such as their local Royal British Legion branch and other charities that provide support for veterans and their partners.

Abney Court provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the home has their very own café, cinema and hair salon and plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation. The home has a comprehensive activity programme, offering a mix of themed events and group activities.
