Chingford care home to host dementia advice event
  • Ivy Grove Care Home, 71 Hatch Lane, London

  • Wednesday 20th May 5:00pm until 6:00pm
A care home in Chingford is inviting the local community to a free advice session in support of Dementia Action Week.

On Wednesday 20th May from 5pm–6pm, Care UK’s Ivy Grove on Hatch Lane will host ‘Staying Connected: a Guide to Dementia-Friendly Conversations’ – an informative and supportive session designed to help people better understand and navigate conversations with loved ones living with the condition.

While awareness of dementia has improved, survey data from Care UK reveals families still face challenges when it comes to communicating with loved ones. Nearly four in ten people (39%) said they avoid visiting relatives with dementia because of how difficult it can be, and nearly all of those polled (93%) feel communication barriers prevent meaningful interaction.

The event will explore simple, practical ways to stay connected, helping to build understanding, ease frustration and create more meaningful everyday moments. Attendees will also receive a free copy of a newly developed guide, which includes helpful tips to support more confident and compassionate communication.

The session is open to anyone interested in learning more about dementia-friendly communication, including family members, friends and carers.

Jacob Mante, General Manager at Ivy Grove, said: “Communication can become one of the most challenging aspects of supporting someone living with dementia, but it’s also one of the most important ways to maintain connection and understanding.

“It can help to understand that communication doesn’t always need to rely on words alone – small changes in approach can make a real difference. This session is an opportunity to share some of that knowledge in a straightforward and supportive way.

“We encourage the local community to join us so that together we can build a more dementia-friendly Chingford.”

In addition to the event, the Chingford community can explore a newly launched online advice hub, which features in-depth conversations with families of people living with dementia alongside expert advice from Care UK’s specialists. They can also obtain a free guide packed with practical tips and designed to help relatives overcome communication barriers and interact more easily and confidently with loved ones living with the condition. To find out more, please visit careuk.com/bigdementiaconversation.
