RECIPE FOR LE PAIN PERDU -
Literally 'The Wasted Bread'

recipe_pain_perdu2.jpg

In the old days, in the French countryside, farmers used to make a dessert at the end of the week out of a few pieces of wasted bread . It has evolved into a simple recipe, and children in particular love it.

This is how my own mother would keep my sister and me busy on a rainy afternoon:

Ingredients for two servings:

  • 4 slices of thick white bread
  • 2 ultra fresh eggs
  • 2 large spoons brown or white sugar
  • 1 small glass of full fat milk
  • 1 pod of vanilla

Recipe:

  • Pour the sugar in a bowl, and break the 2 eggs on the top.
  • Whisk energetically.
  • Cut the vanilla pod lengthwise, scrape out the seeds and add them with the milk to the mix.
  • Pour half an inch of the mixture into a large deep plate
  • Heat a frying pan on the stove with a nut of fresh butter
  • Dip a slice of bread into the mixture - let the bread soak for a few seconds making sure that both sides are fully coated and then fry in the hot butter
  • Flip when golden on each side.
  • Serve straight away or keep in a warm oven until the four slices of bread are all done...that's it.
  • It's delicious! You can add fresh sliced fruits like strawberries and bananas or pieces of pineapple.
