A teenager was mugged in the cattle market car park on Saturday night.....

Two people attacked a 16 year old teenager, stealing his mobile phone whilst he was using it to send a text message. The muggers punched him on the back of the head, and one of them stole his phone. The assaulted boy chased one of the muggers across the bridge to the meadows, where the Riverside festival was happening, where a security guard joined the chase. Unfortunately the mugger got away.

The boy suffered facial injuries, but didn't need hospital treatment.

One of the attackers is described as 5ft 5in tall, aged between 17 and 18, and of slim build with short blonde hair. He was wearing anda dark T-shirt. The other mugger was between 19 and 20 with sandy brown hair covering his ears. Hed was wearing a light-coloured hoody and carrying a backpack with a red pocket on the front.

If you can help find either of these two, then contact DC Dave Parrish of Stamford police on 01780 752222 extension 3622 and quote incident number 530 of July 5. Police wish to assure us that this is an unusual incident in the Stamford area, and we shouldn't be too worried about it.

I guess the festival gave some youngsters the opportunity to get a bit of cash from someone in the crowd. I seem to remember that muggers was a name for a type of indian crocodile. I have an ancient family photo someone, simply entitled 'muggers' - does anyone know where the term muggers came from when describing street robbing?
