I initially purchased a 2 week trail of the gym, and was hoping that something would put me off during that time such that I could return to the comfort and laziness of sitting on the sofa.
I was hoping that perhaps the staff would see my overweight physique and lack of trendy gym clothes and treat me like a lower class citizen. Unfortunately, they were extremely welcoming and made me feel at ease. So that was one excuse out the window.
I tried visiting at various times of the day, in the hope that it would be rammed full of people and I could use that as an excuse not to come any more. Again, I unfortunately couldn’t find a time when it was too busy to train.
Finally, I thought that perhaps the other members would be intimidating and make me feel like I was an inconvenience as a newbie. That would be a really good reason not to come. Yet again, I couldn’t use that excuse because everyone I’ve met there has been helpful, respectful and encouraging. I now train with my partner, and have a gym buddy that puts me through my paces too.
If you’re looking for somewhere to make a half-arsed attempt at joining a gym in the hope of finding some good excuses not to work out, this sadly isn’t the place for you. If you want to lose some weight, get in better shape and make some friends all in one go then you’re in the right place.
