Wyboston Lakes St Neots golf protégé wins dream Open Championship place!
East Anglian golfer Jamie Abbott, aged 23, will be teeing up next to Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood, after qualifying for The Open Championship, which will be played at St Andrews, the home of golf, from the 15th - 18th July.
Abbott, a top amateur player and England squad player from Fynn Valley Golf Club, Suffolk, has been coached for the last five years by Paul Ashwell at Wyboston Lakes Golf Centre, and currently has a handicap of +4.
Paul Ashwell, head coach at Wyboston Lakes, said “I am really excited for Jamie. This is an outstanding achievement and is a big step in our plan for him to become a successful tournament professional.”
Competition was stiff in Abbott’s qualifying event with over 1000 entrants playing for 12 chances to lift the Claret Jug, Europe’s most prestigious golfing prize. In the final stage, at Kingsbarns, Abbott shot -4 to tie for second place, taking him into a playoff, from which he was able to secure a ticket to St Andrews.
Good Luck Jamie...
