ST NEOTS ROWING REGATTA, 23-24 JULY 2011

St Neots Rowing Club is preparing to host crews from across the region and the country for its Annual Regatta on the River Great Ouse over the 23-24 July weekend.

Last year’s Regatta saw over 50 clubs represented, from as far away as Maidstone in the south, and Tyne and Tees in the north, as well as a very strong local contingent: 5 Cambridge clubs, 2 from Bedford, plus Huntingdon, Peterborough, Oundle and Ely.   There were over 500 races across the two days, with more than 600 crews competing across the weekend.  The event also attracted many local spectators, keen to see the St Neots rowers in action.  This year the Club once again anticipates continuous racing over a 9 hour period on both days, and hopes that local people will turn out to cheer on the crews.

Entry is free to spectators and there will be a barbecue, licensed bar and other refreshments available.  Racing starts at 9 am on Saturday, through to 7 pm, and from 8.30 on Sunday until 6 pm.  Races will include both sculling and sweep-oar rowing and competitors from junior and senior categories.

Kendal Cooper, Regatta Secretary, said:

“If you want to find out a bit more about rowing ahead of the 2012 Olympics, or if you just like the idea of spending a lazy afternoon by the river watching the action, then join us by the Ouse for another fantastic weekend of racing.  The St Neots Regatta is always a great weekend, largely thanks to all the local people and businesses who support it.  Once again we hope as many people as possible can join us down by the river, opposite the Priory Centre, to cheer on the crews, whilst enjoying the refreshments on offer. ”

The Club hosted its first Regatta in 1874.  It now forms the largest river-based regatta in the Eastern Region and one of the largest two-day rowing events nationwide.  For further information see www.stneotsrc.co.uk.

St Neots Rowing Club was founded in 1865 and has championed competitive
