St Neots Rowing Club Race Report March 4th 2012

St Neots Ladies tame the Thames

St Neots Rowing Club ladies returned from a very successful race at the Womenâs 72nd Eights Head of the River Race on the Thames on Saturday.  They managed to improve their ranking by moving up 45 places on last yearâs event and as a result are within the top 200 womenâs eight crews at position 192.  The crew comprised Ali Brown, Sarah Davies, Tash Wilson, Mia Hartwell, Lynne Taylor, Louise Rushworth, Dione Page and Angela DeStefano, with Sarah Porteus as cox.

This event has grown from very humble beginnings in 1930 to become a prestigious womenâs rowing event attracting 19 international crews.  It was a truly spectacular event as some 2,600 women in 293 boats drew on their hard winter training to complete the 6.8k Boat Race course from Mortlake to Putney.

The St Neots menâs eight will be taking their turn in 2 weekâs time, followed by a womenâs masters crew the next day.

Ali Brown who was at stroke said:

We had a very solid row in ideal weather conditions, maintaining a steady rhythm throughout.  Sarah Porteus as our cox steered a fine course and gave us a good line to overtake two other crews which did wonders for our motivation.  It was a great thrill to be part of such an important rowing event.

I've lived in St Neots since I was 13, and boy how it's changed. I'm always looking to promote everything great in and around our town.
