On Friday 8th May from 2.30pm–4.30pm, Care UK’s The Wickets is opening its doors to honour the 81st anniversary of VE Day with its very own party.
VE Day marks the moment Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.
Visitors to the Banister Road home will be able to tap their feet to live swing music from Rich Colvin and enjoy food and refreshments specially prepared by the home’s head chef.
Resident Mike Mylod, 88, said: “We must remember the sacrifice of the young men and women and don’t forget the women, they were brave.
“We all know people who were in the war, and we must remember those who were lost. I remember how the tables were set out on VE Day, and the foods we used to eat at the street parties.”
Pooja Dhoot, Home Manager at The Wickets, added: “We’re thrilled to be marking the anniversary of VE Day with the help of the community – and especially excited to dance the afternoon away with some swing music!
“We know this is a very important milestone for residents and are looking forward to having the opportunity to learn more about this poignant period as well as host a fantastic party.
“On behalf of the whole team, I’d like to extend our welcome to anyone interested in coming along for what we anticipate will be an informative and enriching day.”
Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, The Wickets provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The home incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and pub.
