Four Shropshire men are looking forward to a sizzling summer thanks to sponsorship from a county design agency.

The competition barbeque team called Smokin Salop was formed by four men who originally met as students at Shrewsbury 6th Form College some years ago.

Team leader is 29-year-old Joe Allwood, of Meole Village, in Shrewsbury, whose wife Alison suggested a couple of years ago that he get a new hobby and being renowned for his BBQ skills he decided on taking things to the next level.

Making up the team are Tom Almond, aged 29, of Much Wenlock, James McVittie, aged 31, of Shrewsbury and Dan Blizzard, aged 30, from The Wirral and they have enjoyed great success since forming two years ago.

Joe, a technician at Shrewsbury’s Severn Theatre, joined the British Barbeque Society to gain further information and simply to ‘have a go’, winning the Best Newcomer Award out of 24 teams at their first ever event at “Mayhem in May 2014’ held in Surrey.

Slow-cooked Shropshire meat

Joe said: “We always use local Shropshire meat whenever possible and I have developed many of my own sauces and rubs to create specific flavours. Cooking is done slowly over traditional charcoal as the use of gas barbeques and high heat is deemed as grilling, and therefore not allowed.”

In 2015 the team competed at Grillstock in Manchester, one of the biggest BBQ events in the UK, going on to win the burger and chicken categories. This qualified the team for the World Food Championships burger competition in Florida USA in November where they came 8th out of 50 teams from across the world, each of which had won a national BBQ competition to qualify.

Sponsored by Salop Creative

Providing support to the team is Joel Stone, who runs the Salop Creative design agency based on Shrewsbury Business Park and has sponsored the team with a bespoke website, team branding and social media promotion.

Joel commented: “Having known Joe since school and being a local business owner I was only too happy to help put Shropshire on the map by creating a website that is easy to use and mobile responsive to provide profiles, competition information, results and future entries, as well as having an area for sponsors.”

Joe continued: “We are very grateful to Joel for supporting us with the website as well as uniforms, branding and marketing materials and are now looking for further sponsors to help us compete at the bigger competitions.”

Smokin Salop will be competing in various competitions in 2016 and can also be booked for pop-up events. They will be supporting Hobsons Brewery with the launch of their new ‘Hat Collection’ of craft beer on 21st July and 11th August at the Hobsons Brewery Tasting Rooms, Cleobury Mortimer.
