Our bodies are designed to move and regular walking is one of the most important things we can do to keep healthy. Walking at pace can have many benefits including:

  • Reducing risk of heart disease
  • Improving muscle strength
  • Improve cholesterol levels
  • Reduce weight
  • Help reduce risk of developing diabetes
  • Reduce risk of bowel and colon cance
  • Relieve Anxiety and depression

Just 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week can improve your health. The walking for health groups are led by trained volunteers. If you don't like to walk alone join a group and make new friends whilst you get fit.

Walking for Health in Rochdale can help. See the events page for the walks going on around Rochdale.

Here are some top tips to encourage you to walk more: Use the stairs instead of the lift

Park further away from your destination

Walk instead of driving short distances Get off the bus a stop earlier

Have a meeting whilst walking instead of sitting in the office

Change the TV channel without the remote control Walk a dog, (borrow one if nec)

Walk every supermarket aisle whether you need to or not,

Do extra house work or gardening Aim to to climb the stairs at least 10 times a day.

Walk up Knowl Hill

We should be aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day.

A step-o-meter counts your steps, it get s very addictive watching how many you have done.

If you enjoy the walks for health in Rochdale you could become a volunteer, you would need to attend a 'volunteer walk leaders course before leading a group, for more info contact the Health Walks Coordinator on 0161 655 1478 Rochdales' health walk scheme is promoted by Pennine Care Trust.
