To come home to a house that has been burgled is devastating, knowing someone has been inside your home can affect you deeply. Burglary is still a problem in Rochdale, it is often an opportunistic crime with devastating effects. Here are some top tips to help you prevent your home being burgled when you are away from home.

  • Try to make your home look as though someone is in , use timers on the lights, radio or TV
  • Keep your curtains open, closed cutains during the day is usually a sure sign no-one is home
  • If you have milk and newspapers delivered remember to stop them.
  • Ask neighbours to keep an eye on your house if you trust them ,they could collect your post and park their car on your drive occasionally,
  • The post office Have a holiday mail holding service for peole not wanting their mail delivered at all whilst they are away.
  • Holidays are exciting but keep your plans as private as you can. The more people you tell the more people will know your house is empty, so don't broadcast on facebook ot twitter that you are going away, you are advertising the fact that your house is empty.
  • If you have a safe at home use it, mark your belongings with an ultra violet pen so they are traceable.
  • Don't write your full address on luggage labels if you use them, you don't know who is watching out.
  • Use your burglar alarm, join a house watch scheme if you have one in your area. think about starting one if you don't have one already.
  • Secure your shed properly, tidy the garden moving ladders that could be used to reach an upstairs window. keep the garden tidy so no bricks or objects that could break windows are available.

Then RELAX and enjoy your holiday!
