Rochdale is quite an interesting place, Believe it or not. It has a lot of historical importance and is full of interesting facts and secrets. Shh don't tell anyone what I'm about to tel you... On second thought, tell Everyone! I say if you live somewhere you should take some time to get to know it. So get to know Rochdale right here in this post!

  • Did you know that Rochdale takes its name from the River Roche? No? Well now you do!
  • Rochdale is most widely known for its Co-op: The birth of the Cooperative chain.
  • Rochdales beautiful Town Hall was built in 1871
  • The Town Hall is situated in the centre of Rochdale.
  • The original Town Hall's clock tower was destroyed in a fire in 1883 and the new one was built in 1887.
  • The Rochdale Town Hall holds four flags in memory of those who lost their lives at war.
  • The Rochdale Pioneers museum was a warehouse built in 1970
  • The Rochdale Parish Church had its first vicar elected in 1194
  • Rochdale's first chimney went up in 1791 on Hanging Road.
  • In 1824 Rochdale's weavers and spinners formed the Rochdale Journeyman Association.
  • These weavers were the future Pioneers and they opened their first shop on 15 Toad Lane in 1833 which was forced to close down two years later.
  • After this they converted the warehouse on 31 Toad Lane into the first coop shop which is now a museum.

Rochdale, as you can see has a very rich, but little known history. Within the walls of Rochdale you will find many other influential figures who have helped Rochdale become what it is today.
