Low tech transport has gone high tech - following the launch of a website for those with a passion for walking.

Richmond Council played host to the launch of walkit.com - a new online service which allows people to plan journeys between any two points along less polluted routes in West London.

Guest speaker at the launch at the Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham was Dr Alasdair Jones from Living Streets, a charity which campaigns for better streets and public spaces.

Cllr Serge Lourie, Leader of Richmond Council, welcomed the website. He said:

"We are very keen to promote walking in this borough; it's the cheapest, healthiest and most sustainable form of travel, so any way this can be achieved is to be encouraged.

"Residents can not only make better choices for walking in Richmond upon Thames - the website's coverage of neighbouring London boroughs means journeys further afield can also be planned along cleaner routes."

At the launch visitors were able to try the website for themselves. It was commissioned by the The West London Air Quality Cluster Group using a Transport for London grant.

The website address is www.walkit.com/showcase
