You'll no doubt have seen the stunning interior of Richmond's Rock & Rose, and perhaps have been lucky enough to dine there. So we thought we'd reveal more about Lorraine Angliss, the dynamic entrepreneur behind this fabulous restaurant.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY THAT EXCITES YOU?
First of all it’s in my DNA, my family had cafe’s and restaurants when I was growing up. I like food, people and I like parties. Most importantly, I like having fun.
WHAT MAKES RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS A SUCCESS?
Loving what you do, putting your heart and soul into what you do and enjoying it. Caring deeply about the customer experience. Knowing the industry and constantly updating and striding for something better than you’ve ever done before. Rock & Rose & Annie’s are a part of me and I’m always coming up with new and fresh ideas that my guests will enjoy.
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT KEEPING CURRENT AND FRESH?
I love going out to other restaurants, checking out the competition. Reading a lot of recipe books and publications. Seasons matter - the food should always reflect the season. I ask myself questions constantly, what can I do better? How can I make my business grow? These are all things that will take your business to the next level.
YOUR RESTAURANTS HAVE A VERY UNIQUE INTERIOR DESIGN QUALITY. HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A FLARE FOR THE CREATIVE?
I am creative but I didn’t discover that until much later in life. Until recently I suppose. Interior design is a hobby and a passion for me. Rock & Rose was a delight to design because I had an opportunity to really allow my creative juices to flow. I wanted something fun, glamorous and individual. I change things though, I think people get bored very easily, so I try and inject something new as often as I can.
WHAT CAN YOUR GUESTS LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN DINING AT ROCK & ROSE?
They can look forward to that feeling when you walk across the threshold of a restaurant and know that this is going to be a great night. Great food, great atmosphere and great cocktails.
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT DESIGNING AND CREATING THE MENU? WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I believe food should be fun, simple and clean for the ladies and robust and hearty for the men. As such I’m very careful on looking at the right balance on our menu’s. Always value for money, staying unique and creating fun, innovative dishes. We are always trialling new recipes and developing ideas. There should always be something unexpected, a surprise, a treat, a memory.
IF ANYONE WAS GOING TO OPEN THEIR OWN RESTAURANT, HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE THEM?
Three words - Don’t Do It..! However, I would advise them how very difficult it is and ironically it’s not always difficult being busy but keeping busy. They must be experienced and have a fluent understanding of the industry and the business itself. Do not go into any business venture without doing your research. This is a tough industry and no matter what establishment you tend to run, you better get used to going to bed late!
YOU MUST LOVE WHAT YOU DO, BUT BEING THIS ACTIVE MUST TAKE ITS TOLL. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I spend a lot of time in my home in Spain where I like to sit by the beautiful beach bar watching the world go by. It’s important to take breaks, you’re no good to anyone exhausted.

Very proud, very honoured and so grateful to those who have helped me. This business can be an unforgiving one, so it feels great when your restaurant is recognised for it’s efforts and success.
