A competition to find local social entrepreneurs has been launched by Richmond Council this week, with a winners’ prize package worth £10,000 along with prizes and support for other entrants.

The Richmond’s Den, a joint venture from Richmond Council and the Richmond Social Enterprise Partnership, aims to encourage people with a business idea to take the first step, or take the next step if they’ve already started up.

Entries will be invited from people who can demonstrate how their proposal could become viable and sustainable, or grow, with the right support, while maintaining a focus on a social or environmental objective.

The initial entry is designed to be simple: entrants just outline the business idea or proposal in 500 words. Entries will then be shortlisted and those successful will be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of top business and industry judges. The final event hosted by Richmond University on 28th June will showcase the finalists and provide a platform for the winner’s presentation.

The winner will receive a package of benefits worth around £10,000 including a £5k business development grant, equipment and direct support from agreed sponsors. A range of benefits like mentoring and training will also be available for shortlisted entrants.

The competition is open to social entrepreneurs who have ideas for ventures that place an emphasis on social good as well as financial return.  This can be enterprising individuals in any sector, including those that may have already taken a first step.  The competition is open from 19 March, closing on 6 May  with the final winners announced at a gala event on 28 June.

Confirmed sponsors so far are BAA Heathrow, Rugby Football Union, Petersham Nurseries and Olympic Cinema / Empire Design in Barnes.
