Jubilee fever will reach fever pitch in Richmond upon Thames this weekend with thousands of residents taking part in more than 200 street parties. 

Richmond Council received 232 applications for road closures from residents keen to host street parties. With so many residents embracing the Jubilee across the borough Richmond upon Thames will be one of the biggest party hotspots in the capital. With Jubilee Avenue, Whitton, and Queen’s Road, Sheen, holding street parties, the borough is certainly living up to its royal ties. The vast majority, 215 street parties, will be taking place across the borough this weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Others have been arranged for a later date. 

Party highlights in the area over the weekend will include Whitton High Street, where the entire street will close on Monday and kitted out with trestle tables, decorated in traditional bunting, to enable the community to enjoy a huge celebration together. 

Patriotic residents in Langham Road, Teddington, have pulled out all the stops to make the Jubilee go with a swing. Scores of children will take part in their very own pageant on wheels on Sunday. The youngsters have been busy decorating their bikes, scooters, buggies and karts, for the procession. This will be followed by a glass of bubbly, and fish and chips or bangers and mash. The street will be packed with competitions and games, a bouncy castle, children’s entertainer and face painting. There will also be a sing song of 1952 tunes around a piano and a tug-of-war challenge with neighbouring Twickenham Road. 

In St James Avenue, Hampton Hill, residents are planning a game of street cricket, a competition to judge the best decorated house, tug-of-war and a bake off. While in the evening residents will be treated to an eight piece jazz band and other musicians playing 1950’s classics.

Holding a street party is something of a tradition for the people of Clarence Road, Kew, as they also held one for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee 35 years ago. Yet again, the residents will come together to deck out their street in bunting and flags and plan to display photographs of the street’s previous Jubilee party. The residents of Cedar Avenue, Twickenham, are planning to get into the royal spirit by marking the beginnings of the Queen’s reign with a 1950’s fancy dress and vintage tea and food. They will finish their day of celebration on Monday by releasing Chinese lanterns. 

The number of Jubilee street parties smashes the 85 held in the borough for Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton.
