It has often been said that “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”. Whether you think this is true or not, are you willing to take the chance? How do you make a good first impression?

When going to a business meeting many people make the mistake by focusing just on their appearance. Whilst you should be dressed appropriately i.e. Suit with a shirt and tie for men and skirt/trousers with blouse or jumper for women. You should also ensure that your shoes are clean. There are also other ways you make a good impression.

Here are my 7 tips to making a good first impression:

  • Be well prepared i.e.  Presentation, information about the company and any documents. Really get to know your stuff; you can never be too prepared.
  • Arrive early at least 15 minutes before your meeting.
  • Be yourself – remember they liked you enough to invite you to a meeting.
  • Smile – this will help you to relax and give the impression you are confident.
  • Ask questions and be attentive – People love to talk about themselves and their businesses. When the person you are meeting is talking ask questions to show you are interested and listening.
  • Sell yourself – there will come a time in the meeting where you will be asked to talk about yourself and your business. This is not the time to be modest, really sell yourself because if you don’t nobody else will.
  • Finally be courteous and thank them for their time.

Applying the simple tips above might make the difference on whether you win or lose that next client/contract.
