Golf brings in a cash boost The Open Golf Championship, held at Lytham St Annes last summer, brought in £65m worth of benefit to Lancashire according to new figures. Data shows the prestigious event ploughed £28m directly into the county economy while global exposure added another £37m. Ramblers and runners are being invited to sign up to a challenging long distance event. The Anglezarke Amble will start at Rivington Village Hall on Saturday February 9. There will be a 24-mile challenge for runners and walkers taking in Rivington, Anglezarke, Turton and Darwen moors, or a 16-mile route for shorter distance walkers. Entry costs £7-£8. For details, log on to www.ldwa.org.uk/westlancashire Borough is a ‘safe place’ Street cleaning and waste collection services top a residents’ poll and the majority of people think Wyre is a safe place to live. Those are the initial findings of Wyre Council’s biennial Life In Wyre survey, which documents residents’ thoughts about the area and council services. Findings include 84 per cent of residents said they are satisfied with the area they live in, while 99 per cent feel safe during the day and 81 per cent feel safe at night. Lane closure to allow work A lane closure will be in place for a month on Beech Drive, Preston, from February 4, to allow resurfacing work to take place. The footway will be resurfaced. Lancashire County Council will carry out the work, which will be completed by March 4. Accidents fall to lowest level The number of accidents on Lancashire’s roads has dropped to a new low, according to Government figures. In 2011, Lancashire Police responded to 4,072 accidents on the county’s roads, 41 of them fatal. That compares to 5,247, including 51 fatal, in 2007. The figures were compiled by the Department for Transport. Date for next PACT meeting The next meeting of Preston city centre’s Police and Communities Together (PACT) committee takes place on February 6. The meeting, which is open to all members of the public, will be held at St. Wilfred’s Parish Centre, Chapel Street, Preston. It will get underway from 6.30pm.
