Two care homes in Dorset are inviting the community to learn more about life following a dementia diagnosis.
On Wednesday 16th July, from 2pm-4pm, Care UK’s Ferndown Manor on Golf Links Road is opening its doors for a special event designed to start a conversation about dementia, including what to do after a diagnosis and choosing the right care at the right time.   Meanwhile, Care UK’s The Potteries, on York Road, Broadstone, will host the same event on Thursday 24th July, from 2pm-4pm.   At each event, Dr Kellyn Lee, Founder and CEO of WISER Health and Social Care and the charity The Dementia Care Hub, will explore the types of care and support available, when the best time to move into a care home is and how families can prepare for this. Dr Lee will also share experiences of dementia, its emotional impact and life as a carer.   After the talks, Dr Lee will lead Q&A sessions to answer any questions that may arise.    Pooja Dhoot, Regional Relief Manager at Ferndown Manor, said: “Dementia remains a very misunderstood condition, which can affect a person’s personality and behaviour quite significantly.   “We strongly believe professional knowledge, insight and shared experiences can make a real difference to the everyday lives of those who have just received a dementia diagnosis and their loved ones.”   In addition to the events, the Dorset community can visit The Big Dementia Conversation online advice hub. The portal includes in-depth conversations with families of people living with dementia and expert advice from Care UK’s dementia specialists to learn how to reduce the risks and symptoms of the condition.   Zita Turner, Home Manager at The Potteries, added: “It can be overwhelming for families when a loved one is diagnosed, but we’re here to help and to show that people living with dementia can still lead fulfilling lives.    “We are looking forward to welcoming people into our home and building a community-wide support network.”    Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Ferndown Manor and The Potteries incorporate plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The homes provide full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The layout of the buildings is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.     To find out more about Ferndown Manor and The Potteries, visit www.careuk.com/dorset
