If you’ve ever wondered about the power of Twitter and viral marketing, here’s a story which might tickle your taste buds in more ways than one. It comes with thanks from my thebestof neighbour Ben Rogers who runs thebestofPontypriddandRhondda in Wales …

Ben is a regular user of Twitter to promote his many business clients. Last month Ben tweeted about one of his businesses, a steakhouse restaurant, which was running a special offer about a mammoth burger which they sell which is so big it’s a challenge for anyone to try and eat it.

The tweet was spotted by a local reporter. Ben replied and put the reporter on to the restaurant. The reporter investigates.

The restaurant then gets a feature on page 3 of the South Wales Echo (for free). On top of that it also gets a feature on page 5 of the local Pontypridd Observer.

So who reads local papers?

Well, fortunately for the restaurant, Wales independent radio station – Real Radio saw the articles, followed it up and that same day the restaurant appears on the station. But if it’s good enough for one station it’s good for another and Nation Radio in South Wales also give them a mention.

To top that though, the radio stations started a competition with a prize for 5 lucky listeners to get the chance to go to the restaurant.

The effect of all this – the restaurant is fully booked all weekend.

One tweet leading to lots of free publicity for the restaurant which is now well and truly known by lots of people.

Viral marketing can happen, just make sure you’re ready to cope when it does.
