Talented local buskers will be performing at the centre’s dedicated Busk Stop, while the dynamic singing group, the Thanet Rock Choir, is set to deliver a special performance of popular hits and rock classics. The performance is scheduled for Saturday 14th, between 2pm and 3.30pm, at the iconic Viking ship-shaped sundial seat outside Next.
Adding a creative twist to the celebrations, Westwood Cross has also commissioned a bespoke cartoon from nationally renowned cartoonist Royston Robertson, offering an artistic nod to the centre’s legacy and connection to the local community. 20 signed prints will be made available for guests to win in a giveaway that will launch on the centre’s social media channels.
The centre officially opened on 9th June 2005; an occasion marked by a vibrant opening parade that brought the community together. At the time, it was one of the UK’s largest open-air shopping centres, creating over 1,500 jobs in the Broadstairs area. In the two decades since, the centre has continued to evolve by welcoming new brands, introducing fresh leisure experiences, and becoming a vibrant, community-focused destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
The 475,000 sq ft shopping centre was built on the site of the former Haines Hospital, which closed in 1997. Located at the heart of the main car park is a remnant of the former Haine Hospital, which served as a military hospital during both world wars. Now known as the ‘Memorial Wall’, it stands as a poignant tribute. Etched into its surface are the regiment numbers of the brave soldiers who were treated there during the World Wars, preserving their legacy for future generations. Many of the servicemen, including airmen from the USA and Canada during WWII, left engravings of their regiment numbers, initials, or names on the wall.
