Despite the fact that Christmas is just around the corner, we still have the desire to escape the harsh winter climate and escape to the sun!
Yes, winter getaways are high on our agenda; however, we are being slightly more cautious than previously, and are choosing the old tried and tested destinations, rather than trying something new.
The old favourites such as the Canaries, Cyprus, Turkey and Spain's Costa Blanca and Costa De Sol continue to sell well. Further afield, The Caribbean, The Maldives and The Seychelles are also performing well.
The Canaries have made a big comeback as the top selling winter hot spot. It's all to do with the combination of good air connections from the UK and hotels to suit every budget. It is steadily moving more upmarket and now has a supply of 5 star, classy hotels for those looking for quality, as well as the budget properties for those looking for winter sun on the cheap. Another old favourite is Cyprus, which has re invented itself as another upmarket destination in recent years. It now has a big supply of 5 star hotels with spas, which has added another dimension to the island’s appeal.
The ultimate winter sun destination is The Caribbean, for guaranteed sun, sand and sea, its laid back atmosphere and the increase of the all inclusive hotels, which makes it easier for people to budget. Barbados is the most popular island, mainly because of its British feel, easy access and huge selection of beach front hotels, which range from family friendly to luxury resorts. St Lucia and Antigua are other favourites but good value destinations such as The Dominican Republic, Cuba and Mexico are pushing forward.
The Maldives are all islands that are privately owned and although not cheap, there is plenty of choice. They are great for high end relaxation or great diving for those who want to do more than just sit on a beach.
So here are my Top 10 Winter Destinations for 2011/2012:

Looking to next year...
With February half term only just around the corner (scary, I know!), the low cost carrier flights are starting to fill their planes. Prices will, as always, increase in price after the Festive Season, as people turn their attention from Christmas to holidays. So if you’re thinking of taking your family away for a break to the sun then make sure you add booking your February holiday to your pre Christmas 'To Do' to list if you want to save some pennies!
