It has been revealed that Macclesfield will become home to the first of the new 'academy' schools in the UK.

Fallibroome High School on Priory Lane School has been given the green light to become one of the first academies in the UK, after being named as the first of 153 schools that have applied nationally to be given the go-ahead.

The school, which is widely considered to be one of the leading centres for education in the UK, received the news on the back of record breaking GCSE and A-Level results.

Headteacher Peter Rubery commented: "To be approved as one of the first new academies in the country is a tremendous reflection of the hard work and commitment of a remarkable community of students, teachers and parents."

The 'Academy Order' which has been signed by the highly respected school is now awaiting approval from Education Secretary, Michael Gove and will allow the school greater freedom from local authority control and the national curriculum, as well as greater control over their budgets, terms and school days.
