Roads across Macclesfield have been described as some of the 'most affected' by the recent bad weather, with both black ice and snow wreaking havoc across the local area.

Over 150 calls were made to Cheshire Police yesterday to report collisons caused by the winter weather, with more than 76 separate accidents taking place between 6am and 2pm yesterday.

Macclesfield, Warrington and Congleton have been some of the most badly hit locations within the UK, with cars skidding off the road and 'black ice' being reported on roads across the region.

A spokeswoman for Chehsire East Council explained that despite their best efforts, the weather had got the better of them: "All routes were salted yesterday evening in response to continued freezing temperatures across the Cheshire East area."

"Despite these efforts, rain showers earlier this morning resulted in some roads being affected by black ice and creating hazardous driving conditions."

Cheshire Police have issued the following advice to local motorists to help reduce the risk of accidents:

  • Only make journeys that are absolutely necessary.
  • Ensure your car is fully defrosted before setting off.
  • Maintain a safe and constant speed, giving extra distance for braking.
