Houmi’s bedroom is plastered with posters of her childhood heroes. From Marilyn to Mel B, these are the women she’s spent her whole life unquestioningly adoring. As she gazes on their faces, the penny drops: none of them look like her. Houmi realises she’s never tried to
seek out heroes that share her heritage. Thus begins the quest of all quests, where we meet an 11th Century samurai, two powerhouse suffragettes and a legendary queen. And best of all, it’s literally, totally autobiographical. Well… Sort of.
In The Beginning Woman Was The Sun is Houmi Miura’s debut one woman show, supported by HOME, Unity, Arts Council England, New Earth Theatre and Horizons Collective
“A creative and controlled outpouring of righteous fury at those who say, ‘You don’t belong here’”
“Fearlessly explores her own story and identity with insight, honesty and above all, good humour, to challenge preconceptions we in the West hold about East Asian women”
“ It’s so alive and inventive in a way that really pushes the form of a one-person show”
