In some movies set in Liverpool the city itself becomes one of the central characters. David Morrisey’s directorial debut ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ is one that perfectly illustrates this. But new dark cop movie ‘Blood’, out on DVD this week, does just the opposite.
Despite the fact director Nick Murphy is from West Kirby and local acting talents like Stephen Graham feature, the setting is deliberately anonymous.
Even Stephen Graham’s accent, as Liverpudlian as a plate of steaming Scouse, has been completely neutralised.
I’m not sure why this has been done as Liverpool’s chief asset is the city and its inhabitants.
Nevertheless, the scenes in places like Bootle and Hilbre Island at West Kirby is enough to engage interest - if it was somewhere like Croydon it might be another matter.
The plot revolves around the murder of a 12 year old girl which is investigated by police officer brothers Strong and Graham. Their dad, a retired cop going senile, played by Brian Cox likes to talk about the old days when suspects were ‘taken out to the islands’.
The chief suspect in the case, a paedophile, looks like getting away with it when the brothers take matters into their own hands with disastrous consequences.
‘Blood’ is out on DVD and is available on video-on-demand (Blinkbox) and Blu Ray (Lovefilm).
