Formby Vikings RUFC – Press Release

5/10/2009

Formby Vikings were proud to host over 500 young rugby players last week at their ground.

The first game was a local derby on Tuesday 29th September 2009 between Range High School and Merchant Taylor’s sixth formers. Range are now utilising the Vikings pitch as their home pitch.

Range the underdogs started the game with true grit and determination, knocking back the Merchants attack and causing them to make minor errors. Merchants however started to take the upper hand and through their obvious organisational skills after the second and third phase found gaps in the Range defence and went over to score a handful of tries.

Obviously both teams had some stars who play at county level but the main difference was the Merchant Taylor boys are more organised and train more often, but Range man for man could compete against them and the final score never reflected the bruising game witnessed by the spectators.

Next on the Vikings Diary was a year 1, 2 & 3 Primary school Tag day and games on Friday 2nd October 2009. Over 120 children from St Lukes, Our Ladies and Redgate attended and the morning the children received coaching sessions delivered by coached from England RFU and Formby Vikings. A short break for lunch was followed games in the afternoon in the children’s respective year groups. Their was a legue structure, however due to the showers there was no team nominated as a clear winner and all the children received a certificate of attendance, personal invatation letter to join the Formby Vikings and freebies from Sefton Anti-Social behaviour Unit which included book-marks, lanyards and pencils.

Finally, Formby Vikings Mini & Midi section hosted Liverpool Collegiate on Sunday 4th October 2009, which facilitated over 300 children playing rugby.

The Tag Team (Y1,2 & 3) saw their ranks swell following Fridays coaching sessions and their were 5 games between the two teams played. Although evenly matched with a mixture of new children playing rugby speacial mention must go to newly appointed coaches Paul Lambert and Andy Nicol for their sterling work. Man of the match was Gabriel MAULT.

Next were the Vikings Under 9’s who were playing their first ever game of contact rugby. This was an end to end game with fantastic support play from both teams which resulted in the visitors winning 55 – 45 however in truth some the game could have gone either way. The Vikings wish Ethan HALL-LYONS a speedy recovery after a clash of heads and slight concussion.

The Under 10’s also had a bruising game and initially went down by three tries. This seemed to embarrass them into action and they quickly responded with two of their own. The game continued in this vain and both teams struggled with the new rules introduced at this age group. The final score was 45-35 in the Vikings favour and the team can’t wait for the return match at Collegiate.

The Under 11’s played a similar game, however borrowed two of the opposition players to make the full side. The game was slightly one sided in collegiates favour, however the final score of 70 – 30 illustrates that there is great potential and lessons need to be learnt.

Formby Vikings Under 14’s played away at Collegiate and due to illness started with a squad of only 13. They played the match in good spirit and lost by 36 to 18. Again the opposition must be thanks for their sportsmanship and lending players to make the games even.

The senior side entertained Northwhich at the weekend. Unfortunately the failed to wake up in the first half and were losing 23 – 0. The second half was a much closer affair and the score was 5 all and therefore we lost 28 – 5.

Next week the juniors are home to FYLDE while the seniors travel away to CARRINGTON.
