On April 3rd 1973, 40 years today Marty Cooper, a Motorola employee, made the first mobile phone call. He used a Motorola DynaTAC to call Bell Labs, reportedly saying "I'm ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end." The device used to place the call was a prototype which would later become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. It was to be the first commercially available mobile phone, and weighed 2.5 pounds. It had an LED display and it cost a whopping $4k. It weighed more than most of todays laptops and was probably 100 times bigger than todays mobile phone.
