Erasmus Darwin was born in 1731 at Elston near Newark. As one of the best polymaths of the 18th Century, he was also very talented in physics, chemistry, geology, metrology and biology.
Having moved to Lichfield in 1756 to work as a physician, he established a medical practice and built up an excellent reputation.
Whilst in Lichfield, Darwin developed his system of evolution, invented many interesting things and wrote long, informative poetry - he was regarded as the leading English Poet of the 1790’s.
Lichfield was also the original location for meetings of The Lunar Society, which he co-founded with Matthew Boulton.

Small but worth a visit with some good, interesting information boards. Nice herb garden outside too. Very close to the cathedral, also worth a visit.
