Thousands of visitors flocked to the cathedral to take in the festive atmosphere with more than 50 decorated trees lining the aisles and filling the building with that special Christmas tree smell.

Of the trees, 21 were decorated by businesses, 19 by charities and 15 by schools for the event sponsored by Greenwood Projects in Lichfield.

More than 9,000 people voted for their favourites in what turned out to be the closest competition yet.

The winners were; in the business category Pool House Veterinary Group, Burntwood Breast Care Group in the charity section and Lichfield Cathedral School in Longdon in the schools section.

Helen Geary, Director of Fundraising at Lichfield Cathedral, said: “As well as raising over £16,000 for the Friends of Lichfield Cathedral, the Christmas Tree Festival is a wonderful opportunity for the Cathedral to give a platform to the amazing work done by local charities, schools and businesses at this special time of year.

“It wouldn’t happen without the incredible support of all the volunteers who decorated the trees and those who stewarded the event and welcomed the public every day.

She added they are very grateful to all the organisations who took part and planning is already underway for a similar event later this year!”
