Here's some top tips on how to eliminate junk mail from your life:

STEP 1:

Stop up to 50% of all unaddressed junk mail by registering for FREE with the Royal Mail's door-to-door opt-out - to request an opt-out form, e-mail your name or address to optout@royalmail.com or call them on 01865 796 988 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            01865 796 988      end_of_the_skype_highlighting

STEP 2:

Stop even more unaddressed junk mail by registering, again for FREE, with the Your Choice Preference Scheme - to request an opt-out pack, e-mail your name and address to yourchoice@dma.org.uk.

STEP 3:

Stop unaddressed junk mail from local businesses by putting a "NO JUNK MAIL" sign on your door or letterbox - professional looking stickers, like the ones pictured below, can be purchased from The Sticker Shop for a few pence.

STEP 4:

Stop some addressed junk mail by registering for FREE with the Mailing Preference Service - this can be done online at www.mpsonline.org.uk or by clicking here.

STEP 5:

Stop other addressed junk mail by returning it to sender - do this by crossing out your own address on the envelope and replacing it with "unsolicted mail - please return to sender" and put it back in the post, unstamped.

STEP 6:

If, after trying all the above, very persistent junk mail senders still aren't getting the message, send them a legally binding, data protection notice - here's the sort of wording you should use:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Notice under the Data Protection Act 1998 not to use my personal information for direct marketing.

I [your full name] of [your full address] require you to stop / not to begin processing personal information relating to me for direct marketing as soon as possible and in any event within 28 days of the date of this letter / email.

If you do not normally handle these requests for your organisation, please pass this letter to your Data Protection Officer or the person who does.

Please note that if you do not comply with this notice, I can apply to the court for an order against you under the Data Protection Act.

Yours faithfully

[Your name]
