Excellent zoo with the right mantra and beliefs. Great staff that are helpful and knowledgeable not only in their own specialism but others too. A credit to way the whole zoo is run. My only regret is that Gerald Durrell who passed away in 1995 wasn't here in person to talk to about all his adventures, still the memory lives on in this zoo as a living testimement to his beliefs.

Usually going to the zoo is not our thing, because we don't like to see animals eke out a miserable existence in a way too small cage.

But this zoo is (mostly) different. It's operating on the premise to provide survival for extremely endangered species. And to see two highly endangered types of bats flying around and eating their fruits from very close was a great experience.

Most animals looked happy and great including the orang utans in their large outside climbing area. The only real downers were the gorillas who didn't look too happy sitting in a plastic environment where their poo was lying around. My daughter pointed out that they had a door leading to their outer cage. But they still looked sad and bored.

The rest of the facilities is great and a lot to see. The staff was also very friendly and answering all the questions we had happily and patiently.

Lovely clean place, lots of animals to see. The lady in the bat cave told us all about the bats which was very interesting. It's a big place and a lot of walking. Very good for children to run around. Lovely picnic areas dotted around the zoo. Toilets are far apart not enough on there but they are clean.
