A care home in Haywards Heath is inviting the local community to mark the anniversary of VE Day.
On Saturday 9th May from 1pm–4pm, Care UK’s Martlet Manor, on Butlers Green Road, is opening its doors to honour the 81st anniversary of VE Day with its very own garden party.    VE Day marks the moment Prime Minister Winston Churchill made the announcement that the War in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.       Guests will be able to enjoy a garden party with live entertainment from Lorna Collins and delicious food and drinks specially prepared by the home’s Head Chef.       95-year-old resident and veteran Roy Godsmark, who did his National Service in Suffolk in 1948 with the RAF, said: “I remember when serviceman were reported missing and then they ended up coming home, it’s my happiest memory. It’ll be nice to welcome the community, especially if they have also served in the Military.”    95-year-old retired wing commander and resident, Syndey Taylor, said: “I started working in the air force when I was 19 years old and I was called up for national service. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Air force and became a QAI flying instructor, later being awarded status as a wing commander. I’m looking forward to the VE Day party, and I hope that everyone will have a lovely time!”      Sarah Barrett, Home Manager at Martlet Manor, said: “We’re thrilled to be marking the VE Day anniversary with a special garden party, celebrating with members of our local community. We’re especially looking forward to spending the afternoon enjoying live entertainment, dancing and fingers crossed – some sun!    “This anniversary is incredibly meaningful for our residents, as many have a personal connection to this important moment in history. It gives us the opportunity to reflect, remember and celebrate in a truly joyful way.    “Everyone is warmly invited to join us for what will be a heartfelt, engaging and memorable garden party.”    Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, Martlet Manor incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities. The home also has its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and a family guest room.        To find out more about Martlet Manor, please contact Customer Relations Manager Rose Grover on 01444 712 668, email rose.grover@careuk.com or visit careuk.com/martlet-manor
