In this month's meeting of the Bucks Pottery and Sculpture Society our guest speaker will be local ceramicist Sophie Smith.
Sophie has been making pottery for the past 20 years from the studio in her garden, where she makes bright and colourful earthenware ceramics that are highly decorative but functional too. She is strongly influenced by medieval art and design, plus some of her favourite artists such as Chagall and Klimt. Her main motivation is to be creative and have fun.
She slipcasts and handbuilds simple shapes and then scratches designs into the wet clay. These are decorated using slips, brush-on glazes, lustres and precious metals. Each piece is fired three times.
Sophie will demonstrate surface decoration with brush-on underglaze techniques, tissue transfer, lustres and enamels. She will be bringing tiles for everyone to have a little try for themselves.
The meeting will be held at Little Kingshill Village Hall (HP16 0DZ) on Friday 26th September from 8-10pm. Entry is free for BPSS members, £5 for visitors. For more information about the Society see our website www.buckspotters.com - we are also on Facebook and Instagram.
