The controversial plan to build a Sainsbury's superstore in Wetherby has been refused by Leeds City Council's planning committee.

Speculation was rife when the supermarket giant originally put forward plans to build a 25,000 ft sq store on the site of the former Ramada Jarvis Hotel (now the Mercure Hotel) earlier this year.

The decision to refuse the application was made last week by Leeds City Council’s Plans Panel East.

A council report which was sent to the plans panel showed that a number of local organisation had objected to plans for the store, including Wetherby Business Association and Wetherby Town Council.

The council also received more than 200 individual letters of objection, compared to only 63 that supported the proposals.

A Wetherby Post Office owner and businessman who objected to the plans commented: “I am overwhelmed. I think this is the right decision for the town and I am thrilled with the decision. This is a small victory for the people of Wetherby. This is only the first step as Sainsbury’s might appeal, but the community spirit in Wetherby is unbelievable"
