Time for a spring clean?  Want to de-clutter and make some money?  One option, which is also a fun day out is to go to a car boot sale.  Here are some tips to make your day run smoothly.

  1.  Arrive early, car boots can be quite busy and you want to make sure you get a place as well as have plenty of time to set up.
  2. Make sure your table is packed in last so that it is the first thing you take out of the car and you can start to load all your items onto it
  3. Take refreshments with you as not all car boot offer food stalls.
  4. Take carrier bags, these are useful for those people who forgot to bring any.  Also, if you have any, bubble wrap is useful for breakable items.
  5. Bring a friend, that way you can have a look around too.  It’s nice to have someone to chat to whilst you’re at the car boot sale
  6. Bring plenty of change, lots of coins – especially if you’re selling items at 0.50p – use a money belt to keep your money safe and to hand when selling.
  7. Once the car boot is open to buyers, watch out for the ‘mob’, people swarm to your table when you arrive.  Keep your boot closed when unpacking and look out for thieves.
  8. Make sure you are prepared for any weather. If it rains, make sure you have something to cover up your items.
  9. People will haggle, price things accordingly.  Don’t expect to make much money at a car boot sale.  Sometimes you can make lots, other times you make little.
  10. Think about what you want to do with unsold items – you may want to take them to the next car boot sale, sell on eBay, give to charity, freecycle or bin it.
