This was my 2nd stay at the Duke of Richmond. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. They addressed us by name throughout our stay, remembered our food and drink preferences, and were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel has real personality and style, with each room uniquely decorated - such a nice change of pace from the cookie cutter chains. The food at the restaurant was equally amazing and I highly recommend the fresh fish of the day, usually caught locally.

This is one classic hotel which is superbly adorned with a colonial feel. From the Leopard print in the leopard bar to the beautifully appointed white linen bedrooms this hotel does not disappoint.

The staff get to know you and your requirements very quickly and cannot do enough to help you. Nothing is too much for this great team and I cannot fault them.

Impeccable service in the restaurant and bar, the food is simple, elegant and incredibly tasty.

I will revisit as soon as I am able. One of the best hotel experiences I have had for some time.

We stayed at the Duke of Richmond for three nights with our two children aged 9 and 7. The hotel staff absolutely made the stay , particularly for our son who's birthday it was . They made them feel very special and welcome with treats and entertainment as well great touches like spotting we were going to the beach and lending us a frisbee, football and towels. They also made a cake and sang happy birthday - what nine year old wouldn't be bowled away ? For those without children I can reassure that this isn't done in a "Butlin's " style just very appropriately and with genuine care . The food at breakfast and dinner was also great and the room "uniquely" but comfortably furnished, great views out over the harbour . Couldn't recommend highly enough

What can I say 4 of us stayed at the Duke of Richmond for 4 nights at the end of March 2014. Almost everything was superb decoration, staff, food only gripe the pool is not covered and therefore not in use, other than this I cannot fault the hotel from arrival to departure the hotel staff couldn't do enough. We had a look around on arrival and in the Restaurant was greeted by Orlando, he gave us a very informative and good humoured tour of the dining area, terrace and pool area. Can't fault the hotel décor, bedrooms and lounge area all excellent. Would stay here again.

Hotel is at the top of a hill but is only about a 15 minute walk from St Peter Port.

Just a couple of things about Guernsey it still has the old UK licensing laws and Oatlands Village is not how it is described on the glossy brochure very disappointing

From the moment we walked into the door to the moment we left, the staff were amazing! So friendly and very helpful! Top marks!

The hotel was delightful. Quirky in a good way. We stayed in room 500 which was lovely and quiet too at the end of a corridor - always good for us!

The food was tasty and well presented, both at lunchtime and in the evening.

Loved reading the little booklet re the owner of hotel and why it is decorated as such. Interesting.

We will definitely be returning. A breath of fresh air to receive such service by highly trained staff!

Just perfect, rooms were lovely, staff super friends especially the restaurant staff....... And the food was just lovely.

Great idea to give guests a drink voucher too, so after a hard day working away you could enjoy a quick pint!!!

I shall be back and will certainly look forward to returning.

Stayed for one night at this lovely friendly hotel. Amazing little touches that you just don't get in the larger chain hotels. Rooms really tastefully furnished and bed linen and towels gorgeous. Lovely helpful staff who cant do enough for you - early check in no problem and so much attention to detail. Only regret is that the stay was only one night.

We stayed four nights in this ugly-looking, but very comfortable hotel.

The service is pretty amazing, starting with emails and phone calls as soon as you book, wanting to know if there's anything they can do prior to your arrival. I asked if they could arrange for us to check in at 12 noon instead of the specified 2.30 - yes, they'd do their best. You want fresh fruit in your room? No problem - what sort of fruit? And they delivered on everything they promised.

Our room was a good size, with a view over the town to the sea. But it was hideous to look at - unless you have a passion for black and white flock wallpaper and black chandeliers. If restrained chic is the look you're after, avoid room 304.

Breakfasts were OK, but nothing to write home about - apart from the wonderful Guernsey butter. We didn't try eating there in the evenings. We preferred to try out the other restaurants in town.

When we were checking out we mentioned that we were sorry we'd missed visiting Victor Hugo's House. Well, you've still got time before your flight, said the staff at the desk, and promptly booked us a slot for an hour later (you can only go on pre-booked tours), and showed us exactly how to get there.

It's a pleasant 7 or 8 minute stroll down into the centre of St Peter Port, but a tiring 12-minute climb back up the hill.

But definitely the best thing about the Duke of Richmond are the friendly staff and the quality of service. It's just a shame that all their literature brags about it so much - it speaks for itself. And talking about their literature I was frankly fed up to the back teeth reading about the saintly Bea Tollman, owner and founder of the Red Carnation chain that owns the hotel.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the friendliness, warmth and professionalism of all of the staff, which started before we even got inside the hotel and continued for our whole stay.

The room was extremely clean and very comfortable and lacked for nothing. We thoroughly enjoyed our cocktails in the Leopard Bar and the food we had was outstanding. We'll remember the fabulous Chateaubriand for a long time.

Our thanks and appreciation go to all of the staff - thank you for giving us a very memorable time. It wasn’t just a stay; it was an experience.

We stayed for four nights in this clean, well maintained and excellently run hotel. The staff were all very helpful and nothing was too much bother. We arrived at 10am (well before the listed 2pm) check in and the girls on reception provided us coffee and croissants while our room was prepared. They sited us in a room near the lift as I had a plaster cast on my leg at the time. We always found a parking space although at busier times this may become an issue. It is situated at the top of the hill in the town BUT if you are happy to walk then this is not a problem.
Not a cheap option but well worth the expense. The bed linen was so nice my wife asked for it to be changed daily, which it duly was, as she loved the fresh sheets.
A very pleasant stay and if we return to Guernsey this would be our preferred hotel.
As a side issue if you want to visit all the island museums go between April and October as outside these times a number are closed to visitors.

We stayed at the Duke of Richmond for 4 days last week and it was a delightful experience. The Hotel is well located on a hill just a few moments walk from St Peter Port Harbour. There is a park in front and another park nearby.
The Hotel itself is beautifully appointed and immaculate.
The food was superb and the restaurant menus were varied daily so there was plenty of choice.
The staff were all brilliant, they were friendly and helpful and professional. They were all so good that it would not be fair to single anyone out.
We booked a Junior Suite and it was well worth the money. We had plenty of space and a large balcony.
We will certainly return.

I have now stayed a number of times at the Duke of Richmond and every time it's been a pleasurable experience. On the most recent visit I had an extra night due to fog and a cancelled flight. For the first time I had the oppotrunity to eat in the restaurant alone and was able to take in those details that you often miss when you're with colleagues or guests.

As previously reported, the hotel has a certain flair with a team of staff who are all clearly dedicated to providing a very high level of service to every guest. This is effident from reception through to the bar and restaurant.

The restaurant is very good and manintains a number of those good old qualities that so many places have simply let slip. The attention by the retaurant team is spot on and just the right balance of being attentive but not too much to be off putting. The food was excellent and well prepared in the kitchens you can see from the restaurant.

Once again, a wonderful stay at the Duke of Richmond.

You have not experienced customer service until you have been here. Set in a beautiful quiet location between two parks with views over the bay of St Peter Port and Cornet Castle and a short walk from the town centre as well as being next door to the Beau Sejour leisure centre (for which the hotel has a membership card).
Our family were greeted individually by name by the concierge and while the adults checked in the children also had a 'check-in' of their own. In our room was a pair of diposable cameras and a checklist challenge for the children to take pictures. There was also an invitation to join the chef to decorate cupcakes in the restaurant. My husband was surprised by a birthday cake and card left in our room.
The restaurant food is sumptuous with fresh local produce including a selection of fresh fish and an interesting wine list.
The decor is eccentric and eclectic and rooms are supremely comfortable. Everything was spotless.
But what stands out a mile is the personal and friendly service. The staff could not do enough for us. It's old-fashioned care and attention and you feel the staff take enormous pride in their work. We were sad to leave.

Unrivalled service from a lovely boutique hotel within walking distance of the lovely town of St Peter Port. Will look up other hotels in the Red Carnation Collection before booking anywhere else. Excellent food and a very personalised service - staff knew us by name from the concierge to the bar!

A recently refurbished hotel with a strange fascination with leopards. It was a corporate booking so I had certain expectations and they were pretty much met. The decor was clean, fresh and interesting - if a little bizarre in places. Staff were friendly at reception, the bar and restaurant. Being January, I gave the outdoor pool a miss! Food and drink were reasonably priced given the quality of the hotel. Whilst the menu wasn't as extensive as some, the food was good value, well cooked and nicely presented. If I have a criticism of the hotel it's that a standard double was quite cramped, even though I was on my own. Not much space in the room and limited flat spaces / storage. I would certainly use it again though.

Beautiful hotel within easy walking distance (10 minutes downhill) of the harbour. Huge attention to detail in the public rooms and bedrooms. Lots of individual touches in the decor and presentation. Small but luxuriously appointed room - we had a view onto the road rather than opt for the more expensive sea view. Excellent breakfast with continental or full English whichever you prefer. Had afternoon tea as part of the deal - this appears to be a very popular treat for the locals and no wonder - multiple types of international teas and more cakes and scones etc than we could manage. Service in the restaurant was first class, though we didn't eat there at night. What really makes this hotel stand out is the friendliness and attention of the staff, without exception excellent and attentive and helpful. Will certainly return if here again.

We returned to the Duke of Richmond over Xmas while visiting our family in Guernsey. This is a superbly run hotel in the Red Carnation chain. From the time we arrived we were welcomed as repeat guests. All the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. When we reached our room there were chocolates and a welcome letter.

We love sitting in the Leopard Bar in the early evening. The drinks menu, especially the martini list is very enticing. It is a wonderful place to relax at the end of a day and catch up on the newspapers while enjoying a drink

This time we were there on Xmas morning and the staff had left two Xmas stockings on our door, filled with little knick knacks and chocolates. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast with a large choice of freshly prepared dishes. The kippers were amazing. We had booked the Xmas lunch for our family and once again the staff worked really hard to make sure everyone had a great time. The Xmas meal was excellent and though it may seem a little expensive to some people the cost was comparable with most hotels for a festive Xmas dinner. Many of the staff worked 12 hours on Xmas day and they were still smiling and attentive at the end of their shifts.

We are very well travelled and have visited hotels all over the world, but I cannot think of another hotel that comes close to this one for its exceptional service.

With our family living in Guernsey we will definitely be back.

That an excellent night..... superb food, great band and excellent staff. Would recommend a visit just for the staff experience - they are so friendly and professional.

Also had an excellent weekend at this same hotel in August to celebrate my husband's 70th Birthday. Had a time to remember with personal waiter service for special meal on the balcony of our own suite. Food and service were excellent - we could not have asked for better. The staff even provided a card and birthday cake !!!!

Visited over New Year to see a family member on the island so spent 3 nights in this hotel. I was impressed at every opportunity with the quality and service but in order to give you insight so you can decide if it's right for you I'll use 3 words to describe each aspect.

The Staff - genuine, warm and helpful
Decor and communal areas - plush, considered and tasteful
Service - high standards, well trained and conscientious
Rooms - luxurious, comfortable and spacious
Food - local, quality and cooked to high standards

I read another review that said this should be a 5 star hotel, having stopped in 5 star hotels I can just about see why its not, but it's certainly as close as you can get and good value.

2 final notes - 1. The beds are huge and very comfy and 2. You have to eat at Le Petit Bistro

I was of the opinion that OGH was the best hotel on Guernsey but the Duke of Richmond" is a strong contender. Our "King Room" was sumptuous and they appear to have thought of everything. As with the OGH the standard of staff training is of the very highest leading me to feel that you could take the entire staff to London's finest hotels and they would fit the bill seamlessly. The staff went the extra mile on all fronts. We can't wait to go back which says it all I guess...

We tend to be 3 star £100 per night hotelgoers but we thought we'd try something a bit special for this new years eve. We got the upstairs room with a view £160. The stay wasn't perfect but overall I rate this hotel Excellent for many reasons: 1) the bedroom is quite romantic- big bed, big pillows, soft big duvey, plush wallpaper. We found the style comfortable, posh maybe; 2) the service quite good- reception greets you with proper salutation, promptly delivers ice, champagne glasses; when we were leaving the hotel the manager offered and kindly provided us a lift into town; 3) the breakfast was extraordinary- freshly squeezed juices of many varieties, she got a huge salmon & egg dish, I got the waffles, it was really delicious.

Some reviews above have criticised the decor. Maybe this is just a matter of taste. We thought it was quite nice. The nightlight in the bathroom added romantic ambiance. Same for the chandelier over the bed.
There were some things that could have been better-the aircon is a bit finnicky, I was charged to make a few local calls, the music from the downstairs party was a bit loud, the rooms aren't very large. But, we had a very relaxing, very enjoyable time, and left hoping that we have the chance to return for another special night someday.
