With festival season officially under way, a care home in Fife is welcoming the community for a fun-filled day of food and celebration.
Care UK’s Scoonie House will open its doors to families and neighbours for a food festival, inviting guests to tuck in and celebrate the nation’s shared love of great cuisine, community and connection.
Visitors to Scoonie House can look forward to a two-day celebration on Thursday 6th August to Friday 7th August. The festivities begin with the grand opening of the Highland Fling from 1.30pm-3.30pm, a resident-led pop-up restaurant serving a tasting menu of traditional Scottish favourites made with locally sourced ingredients, including haggis, scotch broth soup and mince and tatties.
The next day, from 1.45pm-4pm, the home will host its own Taste of Home festival, featuring vibrant street food inspired by African, Thai, Caribbean, Nigerian and Scottish cuisines.
To keep both events sustainable, the home’s decorations will feature recycled, while coffee grounds will be donated to local allotments.
David, a resident at Scoonie House, said: “I’m looking forward to the event as I haven’t had many party celebrations in the past. My favourite food is a medium hot curry with rice, and I’m hoping to sample some more at the festival!”
The events are part of the ‘A Taste of Home’ initiative, which will see all Care UK homes host foodie-themed celebrations and showcase what life in a care home is really like.
The festival will showcase sustainable, community-focused initiatives while celebrating the diversity and creativity within the homes, from residents’ favourite recipes and traditional dishes to seasonal menus featuring locally sourced ingredients.
Melanie MacDonald, Home Manager at Scoonie House, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the local community to our very own food festival!
“We are part of a strong community here in Fife, and days like this are a wonderful way of bringing people together to celebrate our shared love of food, while giving residents the opportunity to share their favourite recipes and traditions with younger generations.
“The day not only promises a lot of laughter, but it is also an excellent way for residents to meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones. We can’t wait to welcome everyone through the doors.”
