Having visited Bourne Hall many times, for both the building activities and the park & lake, the 9 year old was very excited to see a brief history of the Tudors - showing the WORST employment opportunities of youngsters in Tudor times that would have been available at the nearby Nonsuch Palace. There were VERY graphic demonstrations of the various roles - from rat catcher, spit boy, groom of the stool, wool dyer and executioner to mention a few! The 9 year old was active in the role of rat catcher, hitting a rat (ITS ONLY A PUPPET, before anyone complains), until it was REALLY dead - apparently it rolls over when it is! The scary bit was the excellent British practice of being HUNG, DRAWN & QUARTERED, (something that may / should be applicable today?), and the chosen audience member for this one thought the executioner was a bit too realistic - with his massive axe, but no harm done!! For £5 (per child) with the adult going free, an excellent hours and a half spent - along with some little known facts about the Tudors to dazzle (hopefully) the teachers back at school. The next show of interest is apparently Battlefield Medicine - run by an ex-soldier with experience in Afghanistan and with a knowledge of old medical practices as well - I will probably enjoy this one more than the daughter!! Can't wait!!

We went to Bourne Hall today. I didn't know there was a craft fair or I would have brought some spending money with me. Lovely range of products to look at including some pottery and wooden bowls as well. The library is spacious and staff are helpful too. Borrowing books was easy. However I wish I had known about the new Open Ticket Scheme that seems to be in effect. I would go there again. There is a nice coffee shop on site although the range of food to buy appears to be limited. The upstairs museum is good for children.

Highly recommended

Good selection of books and you can sit and read with a coffee or other hot beverage and maybe a slice of cake! More people should use the Library full stop!

Bourne Hall is shaped like a spaceship with a good cade and library in the building. However the real gem is the museum on. the first floor which gives a fascinating insight into the history of the town; it even holds an old carriage with its own history. The curators are only too happy to answer questions.
