Christmas in the trenches

Saturday 16th December

Bully beef, plum jam and mud. Was this really how the British Tommy had to celebrate Christmas in the trenches during WW1? Discover how the troops did manage to celebrate, refusing to allow the harsh conditions to dampen their festive cheer.

Did all the troops celebrate Christmas on the correct day? Learn how gifts from the home front were organised and encouraged by royalty, and find out the whole story behind the Christmas truce of 1914.

Meet a lady of the home front and her soldier friend to see and hear how Christmas time in the trenches was made a relief from the horrors of fighting.
