On Wednesday 6th August from 2pm-5.30pm, Care UK’s Appleby House will open its doors to families and neighbours for a food festival, inviting guests to tuck in and celebrate the nation’s shared love of great cuisine, community and connection.
Visitors to the Longmead Roadhome can look forward to a delicious barbecue including shish kebabs, honey glazed paneer tikka, and beef burgers, celebrating residents’ favouriteflavours and dining traditions.
Guests are encouraged to show off their best dance moves to the live jazz band, Malindi, and enjoy a tour of the home’s own allotment, which is growing fresh potatoes, onions, courgettes, tomatoes, rhubarb, herbs, raspberries, strawberries, and much more.
Resident Jill Wade,86, said: “I am looking forward to being with family and listening to the live music. My favourite foods are chickenand jacket potatoes, and when my children were growing up,I loved making sweet and sour chicken for them.”
The event is part of the ‘A Taste of Home’ initiative, which will seeCare UK homes across the country host foodie-themed celebrations and showcase what life in a care home is really like.
Each festival will showcase sustainable, community-focused initiatives while celebrating the diversity and creativity within the homes, from residents’ favourite recipes and traditional dishes to seasonal menus featuring locally sourced ingredients.
Shona Bradbury, Home Manager at Appleby House, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the local community to our very own food festival!
“We are part of a strong community here in Epsom, and days like this are a wonderful way of bringing people together to celebrate our shared love of food, while giving residents the opportunity to share their favourite recipes and traditions with younger generations."
“The day not only promises a lot of laughter, but it is also an excellent way for residents to meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones. We can’t wait to welcome everyone through the doors.”
