A Month of Sundays by Bob Larbey
18th to 21st November
(with Saturday matinee)
A Month of Sundays is a comedy about the difficulties inherent in growing old and takes place in Cooper's room in a residential home for the elderly, where he has gone to live rather than become a burden on his family. He flirts valiantly with the female staff, banters with his good friend Aylott and keeps a check on his “record of physical deteriorations". The action revolves around these relationships and the painful ritual of awkward monthly Sunday visits from Cooper’s daughter and son-in-law, while Cooper and Aylott realise that life can only be endured if treated as a comedy.
Bob Larbey, in partnership with John Esmonde, created much-loved sitcoms from the mid-1960s until the mid-1990s including The Good Life, Please Sir! and Ever Decreasing Circles. His solo successes included A Fine Romance and As Time Goes By. A Month of Sundayswas his first stage play, written in 1986. Director Joy Ridley said: “Having grown up with these classic comedies, seeing Bob Larbey’s name was enough to make me want to direct this play. It is a joy to work with a script by such an exceptional comedy writer. There is no big story, it’s about the people, so credibly and fondly drawn, and the finely crafted comedy, balanced by unexpected moments of poignancy to remind us life is not a bowl of cherries!” Ashtead Players have been entertaining the residents of Ashtead and beyond for more than 80 years and have an enviably distinguished artistic record. Most of their productions have taken place at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, and every production is very much part of the community that is Ashtead village.
The group is always looking to welcome new members, whether acting, directing, backstage or front-of-house.
