Telling the story of a young man struggling to come out, David is Homosexual was originally made as an educational film for the Lewisham brand of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality by director Wilfred Avery. Lost for decades, this film was only rediscovered in an attic last year.
The film will be followed by a discussion with Ray Crossley, Wilfrid Avery’s partner of 50 years.

Treasures from the archive are painstakingly stitched together to create Queerama, an extraordinary documentary depicting the last hundred years of queer experiences in Britain. Pulling together footage from film, TV and newsreels, dreamily soundtracked by Hercules Love Affair, Alison Goldfrapp and John Grant, the resulting experience is both informative and breathtaking.
Daisy Asquith, the film’s director, will be introducing this screening, talking about the complexities of working with archive material.
Featuring award-winning performances from Derek Jacobi and a fresh-faced, pre-Bond Daniel Craig, Love is the Devil tells the story of painter Francis Bacon, concentrating on his strained, short-lived relationship with small-time thief, George Dyer. With an astonishing supporting cast, time and space is warped as director John Maybury inserts young British artists of the moment – Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas and Gillian Wearing to name a few – into scenes at the Colony Room club, where Bacon famously drank in the ‘60s.
An event in two parts:
Brighton-based queer programmer, Jacob Engelberg, presents an illustrated talk, journeying through cinema’s representations of bisexuality, from well-known Hollywood neo-noir thrillers to underground queer filmmaking to the extremities of European art cinema.
The talk will be followed by a screening of the classic ‘70s film Sunday Bloody Sunday.
