It’s 1912 and mill workers in the Lancashire town of Hindle are enjoying their annual holiday or ‘wake’. Spirited mill girl Fanny Hawthorn claims to have spent the weekend with her friend Mary in Blackpool but a tragedy uncovers the truth of what she was really up to. Pressured by her parents and society to ‘do the right thing’, she decides to do what’s right for herself instead. Controversial in its day, Houghton’s funny and touching play tackles gender inequality, hypocrisy and classism with a strong heroine ahead of her time.
