Some people will automatically qualify for the discount and will receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions in the autumn who will also notify the energy suppliers and arrange the discount. To automatically qualify you must be: Over the age of 75 and getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit Under the age of 75 and getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit but not Savings Credit. Many energy suppliers also offer discounts to other low income customers who meet criteria such as living with a disability, having young children or being over the age of 60. Each supplier has its own rules on who can get the discount so check with yours to find out if you can apply. Councillor Ken Trussell, Cabinet member for Environment, said: âWinter may seem far away but itâs important to be prepared and ensure you have all the help you are entitled to. âI would encourage anyone who thinks they may qualify for the discount to check with their energy supplier or contact the Home Heat Helpline.â The Warm Home Discount scheme applies even if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter and it wonât affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
